BLESMA Member John Mollison takes on the Atlantic – Support and Follow John

BLESMA Member John Mollison, who lost a leg when a mine exploded two days after the end of hostilities in the Falklands, is determined to become the first amputee to row the Atlantic west to east. Just one Briton has successfully completed a solo – but supported - crossing of this great ocean from west to east. For John, it will be the ultimate test of his physical and mental endurance as he attempts an unsupported solo voyage across one of the world’s great expanses of water.

Leaving from the American coastline at Cape Cod on the weekend of 4th – 5th July, he will face weather conditions opposite to those encountered in traditional Atlantic rowing events. The North Atlantic is not a trade wind route; although the current will be with John, weather patterns and wave direction will vary during the course of the voyage. Cold, wet and foggy conditions will be the norm during the first few hundred miles, with the possibility of icebergs around the Grand Banks. Storm conditions are also a real possibility as a result of hurricanes formed in the Caribbean.

The challenge is raising money for BLESMA and at the same time raising awareness of the recent campaign and Downing Street on-line petition designed to encourage the British government to adopt an American-style Purple Heart decoration for military personnel injured while serving their country.

His progress can be tracked from a link on his website “Commando Joe” at www.commando-joe.com by clicking on the “Marine Track” button there.
