The Royal Hospital School A full boarding and day school offering exceptional academic and extra-curricular provision for pupils aged up to 18 years

Royal Hospital School

Set in 200 acres of stunning Suffolk Countryside overlooking the River Stour, the School was founded in 1712 at Greenwich and moved to its present site in 1933. As well as being encouraged to develop academic excellence, every pupil has the opportunity to pursue a huge range of interests and activities, to discover new passions and develop values that will last for life.

Boarding

With more than 560 full boarders, (85% of pupils), the facilities and support given is outstanding. There are two brand new Junior Houses for pupils in Years 7 and 8 (11 and 12 year olds), which aim to help the transition between primary and secondary school. There are seven Senior Houses for 13 -17 year old boarders and day pupils - four for boys and three for girls and these too are going through a refurbishment programme. In the Upper Sixth, boys and girls join Nelson House where more independent living is encouraged in preparation for University life.

Learning for Life

Pupils are not educated simply to pass exams but to enjoy the adventure of learning and to develop a lifelong appetite for knowledge. The curriculum is broad and balanced combining the best of academic traditions with the latest technologies. Facilities include an Art, Design and Technology Centre, well stocked reference and multi-media library and advanced ICT suite.

The Arts

Creativity and imagination are fostered through the performing arts. Music, drama and dance play an important part in school life and this is emphasised by the new £3.5 million music school housing a 200-seat recital hall, 18 practice and specialist rooms, a technical suite and a “rock room”.

An Active Life

There are over 96 acres of playing fields, an all weather pitch, extensive courts and a golf course as well as in-door facilities including a large indoor swimming pool, squash courts, gymnasium and fitness suite. All pupils take part in traditional team sports such as rugby, cricket, netball and hockey but there is also the opportunity to try a diverse range of activities such as water polo, mountain biking, climbing, canoeing, horse riding, dry skiing, shooting and bowls. Every pupil learns to sail and the School has a fleet of dinghies and traditional Cornish Shrimpers. All Year 9 and 10 pupils join one of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Army, RAF, Navy or Marines sections and most choose to continue developing qualities such as leadership, responsibility, self-reliance and resourcefulness.

Entry for Years 7 to 10 is by way of the school’s entrance examination or through Common Entrance at Year 9. Sixth form entry is subject to GCSE results (or equivalent).
